5 Documentaries On Netflix To Inspire Youth
This seems to be the theme of the month around here. Inspiration. My 13 year old is in the midst of planning her first trip to Tanzania to volunteer with ME to WE and the fever seems to be spreading. Already, my 11 year old is talking about how she’s going to fund raise and go on a trip when she’s 13. I really like where this is all heading. So to keep up this amazing momentum we’ve started I put together a list of 5 documentaries on Netflix to inspire youth to do more for each other, their community, for themselves and the world.
Audrie & Daisy is a documentary many teens can relate to about two girls who are sexually assaulted by boys they considered friends. They were harassed by their community and online to a breaking point. I watched this with my tween/teen daughters so we could pause and discuss and to let them ask questions.
He Named Me Malala tells the incredible story of a teenage Pakistani girl shot for her advocacy of women’s education, her survival of that shooting and her unwavering fight against those who want to silence her voice. Malala has become the face of a movement of youth who want, no, demand that their message be heard.
She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry is a timely documentary that looks at the brilliant, outrageous women who spearheaded the 1960’s women’s movement for gender equality. Coming off the wave of the recent Million Women March on January 21, 2017, it’s even more important to show our youth that this is not a new fight but a continued effort for equality.
Happy takes viewers on a journey from the swamps of Louisiana to the slums of Kolkata in search of what really makes people happy. Everyone defines their own personal happiness.
Living On One Dollar follows four American friends traveling to rural Guatemala, where they attempt to exist on a dollar a day for two months to experience life in extreme poverty. Perspective is everything in life and understanding another perspective is life changing.
With kids, you never know what will resinate with them to spark inspiration. I could be attending an event like WE Day, it could be reading a book, it could be listening to the news or it could be a documentary on Netflix. Where ever they find the inspiration, I want to make sure my kids fan that flame and change the world.
Happy Streaming!
Disclosure: As part of the Netflix #StreamTeam I get some pretty awesome perks but as always, my opinions are my own.
