Fence and Post is Worth The Drive To Cochrane For A Rustic Upscale Experience
This year marks my 41st birthday and in my wiser years, I have grown to love quality time with my friends rather than physical gifts. 2 of my favourite people took me for lunch at a little gem in Cochrane, Alberta. Fence and Post is a rustic upscale restaurant right in the heart of Cochrane (next to the famous ice cream shop in town). My friends treated me to a birthday lunch and without spoilers, Fence and Post is worth the drive to Cochrane for a rustic upscale experience.Fence and Post has an open concept kitchen, which I love. The sights and sounds of a kitchen gives all the background I need for ambient noise in a restaurant. The first dish we ordered out of that beautiful open concept kitchen was cheesy poofs. And they’re exactly what you’d imagine they would be. The best way to describe them would be sort of like a Yorkshire pudding type of bread thingy with cheese baked inside. Yes, little cheesy poofs of heaven. The lunch menu is a perfect mix of creative salads and rich flavourful sandwiches. I picked the BLT with a side beet and greens salad. I was trying to decide between the BLT and the Grilled Cheese, then I read that they make their bacon IN HOUSE! DONE! The bacon makes this sandwich chewy and salty and amazing. I prefer the meat in my sandwiches to cover corner to corner so that every bite has the same flavours from beginning to end but it was only a minor short coming. I would definitely order this again. The decor got my attention from the second I walked in. Rustic upscale. From the exposed brick walls to the industrial light fixtures, it is perfect from floor to ceiling. I especially love the faded tones like a well weathered farm house. There’s even a cozy spot at the front window perfect for an intimate conversation over a dessert and coffee while watching the people on the side walk go by.Every meal should end with dessert in my opinion. I will often pick a restaurant on the dessert menu alone and Fence and Post didn’t disappoint. In honour of my birthday I was presented with the ‘daily slice’ which was a triple layer chocolate cake with a creamy chocolate icing. The cake was light despite it’s dense appearance and was delish. We also shared three warm chocolate chip cookies and the pavlova topped with mango cream and fresh pineapple! Light and refreshing and chewy meringue. SO good!Check Please: Overall I give Fence and Post in Cochrane, Alberta 3.5/5. The decor is comfortable and intimate, the staff is knowledgable and very friendly. The (lunch) menu offers a variety of lighter dishes as well as hearty sandwiches and thankfully, dessert. I was please that they were accommodating to my nut allergy and were able to make minor modifications to my meal to remove nuts with no fuss. I would love to return for another visit to try out their dinner menu. It looks amazing and totally different than their lunch menu.
Final Note: Fence and Post is located at 214 – 1 street SW, Cochrane, Alberta. Next to the Mckay’s Ice cream shop.
