How To Make A Sock Bun (minus the sock)
Hey Dirty Girl, show me how to make a sock bun!
I recently posted a picture of my hair in what is now commonly referred to as a “sock bun”. As a result I got several requests from my followers on Instagram and Facebook to write a how-to, so here you go.
Step 1: Make the bun roll
While most people are using mens gym socks with the toes cut off to make their rolls, I do not. I have no desire to put my husbands stinky socks in my hair, no matter how many times they’ve been washed. I found tight leg warmers (probably for kids or tweens) at Claire’s and simply rolled up one and then added the second leg warmer on top and rolled it to make 1 big roll.
Whether you use socks or leg warmers, go big! Bigger than you think you need to go. Remember that your hair is going to be tightly rolled over it so make the roll as big as you want your bun as your hair won’t add much if any bulk or size.
Step 2: Ponytail
Gather all your hair on the top of your head. I prefer to place it between the very top and the crown of my head. I don’t want to look like a ballerina and I don’t want to look like I stepped off of a farm in the 20’s. Smooth the hair and work out any lumps or bumps. Take your roll and pull the pony tail thru the centre.
Step 3: Move roll to the end
Carefully move the roll to the end of your pony tail leaving about 1.5-2 inches of hair at the end. (I may be smiling but my shoulders are burning from this position)
Step 4: Tuck and Roll
Spread the ends out around the roll. (Take a deep breath, this part is going to kill your arms!) Using your thumbs tuck and roll the pony tail OUTWARDS working to keep all the hair tucked into the roll. Keep rolling and tucking until the bun is tight to your head. The more you roll the tighter it is. Spray the fly aways with a light hairspray, adjust the hair around the bun to cover the “sock” and ta-freakin’-da, you’re done.
Tips:
1) Dirty hair is better.
2) Find leg warmers that are youth size and are a tight weave with spandex in it. Stay away from loose sweater type knits.
3) Unlike my neon striped leg warmers, try to find something that can easily be hidden by your hair colour. Lucky for me I have enough dark hair to cover it.
4) A little messy is good. Don’t try to make it perfect and slick, you’re not taking the stage with the New York Ballet.
5) Dress it up or dress it down. Add a flower for a fun night out with the gals or a thin head band for a weekend of shopping.
6) Have fun with it and hey, if you use my steps, send me a pic of your results.

These days sock buns are a big thing in my house, with the girls cutting up their own socks to make them. I think I prefer the Claire’s leg warmers idea though!
