My Pizza Creation For YYC Pizza Week

This has to be my favourite week of the year, with the exception of my birthday week, of course. What? Doesn’t everyone get a whole week for their birthday? Any-who, in it’s 3rd year, #YYCPizzaWeek runs from September 23-October 2 with almost 50 destinations participating. Each restaurant has created a one of a kind, limited release pizza for diners to order off their menu. A portion of the proceeds from each of those pizzas sold goes to benefit one of the 2 charities chosen for the 2016 year. Pretty cool, huh?

I’ve been challenged to participate in a blogger challenge for #YYCPizzaWeek to create a custom pizza using mystery ingredients bought at Lina’s Italian Market. My pizza creation for YYC Pizza Week is a sweet and salty pie that I call, “Oh Honey, it’s date night”. The mystery ingredients we could pick from are dates, Guanciale (I had to google it), Italian sausage and mushrooms. We had the option of using a minimum of 2 or all 4 ingredients and I picked the first 3.

My pizza creation starts with hand stretched pizza dough (made fresh in house at Lina’s), covered in authentic Italian pizza sauce and a light sprinkling of grated mozzarella cheese.

Top that with a blend of crumbled mild and spicy Italian sausage and more cheese.

Guanciale wrapped dates, crispy from the frying pan, are placed over the cheese and then fresh basil goes on top.

Once the pizza comes out of the oven, it’s finished off with a healthy drizzle of Canadian honey which melts into a warm, sweet topping on this savoury pizza pie.

The balance of the salty guanciale and Italian sausage and the sweet honey and dates make for a delicious creation. Oh honey, it’s date night!
