Rock The House Run: Making My Kid Cry Since 2012

Rock The House Run

At a certain age your kids figure out that they CAN trust you as a parent. They figure out that you’re actually not out to get them.

Until now I think my 10 year old thought I was a spy (in fact, she did ask me one day if I was a spy) assigned by a covert organization to pose as her mother in order to force her to carry out missions of espionage do things outside her comfort zone.

No, I’m not trying to poison you. If I wanted to poison you, I’d put it on a mini donut not on broccoli.

No, I’m not trying to dress you like a clown (unless it’s Halloween then I AM trying to dress you like a clown).

No, I’m not trying to torture you. Participating in the 1k McDonald’s Go Active Run/Walk is not a form of torture used by the CIA.

Ok, lemme splain…At the 2012 Rock The House Run™ I brought my then 9 year old along with hopes that she would participate in the 1k McDonald’s Go Active run/walk. I’d never seen it but I heard great things about it. Great prizes. Happy children. The whole 9 yards.

She had no interest. I begged. She resisted. I tried to sell it to her in any way that I could. She just wasn’t buying it. I offered bribes. She declined. I tried to register her for it anyway. She cried. I backed down.

Sigh.

I was sad because I knew she would love it but not as sad as she was when she watched from the sidelines as the kids race started.

She watched as they ran, with Happy Meal boxes in hand, around the parking lot course, using the boxes to collect goodies and prizes, treats and gift cards. I could see her face turn from shock to excitement to utter disappointment when she looked at me and asked in a panic if she could still get into the race and I had to tell her, no. She begged. I said no. She pleaded. I said no. She tried to negotiate. I said no. She cried. I hugged her and said no, I’m sorry, you made your choice and now it’s too late.

Oy, do you think she learned a life lesson that day?

So today I asked her if she wanted me to register her for the 1k McDonald’s Go Active Run/Walk for the 2013 race…OH YES MOM!!!

Lesson learned. Mom is NOT out to get me.

Don’t let your child cry when they find out what they’ve missed.
