The Biggest Movie Screen In North America
Don’t blink or you’ll miss it. The small town of Enderby, BC (population 2964) is nestled between Mara Lake and Vernon, south of the Trans Canada Highway. Most people don’t notice they’re driving thru it, much less stop and see any of the sites Enderby has to offer. Fun Fact: Enderby is home to the biggest movie screen in North America and can be seen from the road as you pass thru town.
The Startlight Drive-In Movie Theatre isn’t as old as some other theatres as it opened in 1996. The screen was moved to Enderby from Alberta after a theatre there closed down. The movie screen is 50 feet by 120 feet and lays claim to being the largest outdoor movie screen in north america.
Just like a big city theatre, Starlight has the latest box office summer hits and as with any drive-in, you get 2 blockbuster movies for the price of 1, if you can stay awake for the second movie.
Plan to arrive early to get a good spot and enjoy the summer evening and family atmosphere. The large grassy area in front of the screen can be used for kicking a soccer ball, throwing a baseball or frisbee. Kids often play in the long rows of cars (once they’re parked and not driving around) and well behaved pets (on a leash) are welcome to enjoy with the family as well. Eddie loved the cozy blankets too.
Cars, mini-vans, RV’s, trucks and even motor cycles are welcome at Starlight. We haul our sleeping bags, camper bunk bed mattresses and cushions from the dinette to line the bed of the pick up truck. Once we set up the nest, we got our snacks from the concession and pile into our spots. The first movie was a kid friendly flick, Hotel Transylvania 3. The second flick is usually a bit more for the older crowd but still family-ish appropriate. Mission Impossible: Fallout is right up my alley. Often times, the kids will fall asleep in between movies while some families opt to pack up the car and go home during the intermission, which is totally permitted.
Without a doubt, this is my favourite night of our whole summer camping trip and makes for amazing summer memories. I can’t wait to go back next year.
A few things to remember:
Drive-In season starts in May and goes till late September.
Show times vary depending on dusk.
Weekends are busier than weekdays.
